What Happens at Your First Appointment
We love welcoming new patients and have designed your first visit to be both comfortable and informative. Your appointment will take approximately one hour, giving us plenty of time to get to know you, understand your needs, and help you feel confident about your care.
Your initial appointment will include a brief tour of our Hilliard office so you can get a feel for where you'll be spending time throughout your treatment. From there, Dr. Spoonhower will conduct a thorough orthodontic examination, which includes gathering diagnostic records such as X-rays and photographs. These give us a complete, accurate picture of your current orthodontic situation.
Once the examination is complete, Dr. Spoonhower will sit down with you to walk through his findings, discuss the treatment options that are right for you, and answer any questions you have about timelines, procedures, and financial options. Nothing is rushed, and there's never any pressure to decide on the spot.
The Questions That Matter Most
- Whether an orthodontic condition is present that would benefit from treatment
- Whether treatment should begin now, or whether it makes more sense to wait for further growth or tooth development
- Which treatment approaches are best suited to address your specific needs
- Whether any permanent teeth may need to be removed as part of the treatment process
- How long your treatment is likely to take from start to finish
- What the total cost of treatment will be, and what payment options are available to you
What to Bring at Your First Visit
- Any panoramic X-rays taken within the past six months, if available, can save time and give Dr. Spoonhower a helpful head start
- Your dental insurance card, if you have orthodontic coverage. Having this information at your first visit allows us to provide you with an accurate cost estimate right away
- A valid photo ID
- A list of any current medications you're taking
- For patients under 18, a parent or legal guardian should be present for the consultation

Bringing Your Child? Here's What to Know
If this is your child's first orthodontic visit, we want to put both of you at ease. Our team has plenty of experience making younger patients feel comfortable and engaged throughout their appointments. We'll explain everything in a way that's clear and age-appropriate, and we always encourage kids to ask questions too.
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age seven. Early consultations don't always lead to immediate treatment, but they give Dr. Spoonhower a valuable opportunity to monitor development and step in at exactly the right time if intervention becomes beneficial.
